a few studies implicating statins and clinical manifestations of reduced Co-Q10 levels.
First is a study (1) showing what statin may be doing to heart muscle and Co-enzyme Q10 levels:
"This study evaluated left ventricular diastolic function with Doppler echocardiography before and after statin therapy. Statin therapy worsened diastolic parameters in most patients; coenzyme Q(10) supplementation in patients with worsening diastolic function with statin therapy improved parameters of diastolic function."
Here is an association studies that suggests that low serum Co-Q10 associated with dementia (2) and another suggesting that statin use is related to lowered serum CoQ10 (3).
Overall, interesting discussion on the impact of Statins on health. There is much being written on pro- and anti- Statin sides so can be confusing. I really like looking at the cardiac studies as the mechanism of function can be reliably studied as it is in source (1).
